Anyone who’s taken dance music seriously in the past ten years knows about Rob Da Bank. He became a sensation back in 1995 with his South London Sunday’s Best party at Tearooms Des Artistes, whose ‘anything goes’ electronica music policy left clubbers yearning for more after hearing Basement Jaxx and Fatboy Slim there. At one point he was also the official “teaboy” at Muzik Magazine before graduating to Assistant Editor. (Inquiries about tea-bagging should be directed straight to Rob.)
Of course, Sunday Best became such a sensation that an imprint was soon to follow in 1997, introducing the world to the eclectic and upbeat sounds of Groove Armada, Two Lone Swordsmen, and Lemon Jelly. The idea was simple: ‘Turn off your mind, relax and float downstream…’ was the method, perfectly catching the late ‘90s clubber’s ethos of escapism down the rabbit hole every day, not just on bank holidays. When Rollo signed Sunday Best Recordings to BMG in 2001, they went on to sign Grand National and Bent. Of course, the Sunday Best brand is alive and well, spun-off by the ever-popular Bestival – which started in 2004 – a showcase with the finest DJ talent. This past year included the likes of Ashley Beadle (playing reggae!), Carl Cox, Erol Alkan, Jazzanova, Mixmaster Morris and Ricardo Villalobos. (Talk about diverse!) To top it all off, Rob Da Bank and Chris Coco host the current “Blue Room” BBC Radio 1 Show and have done so for the past four years! So if you haven’t caught on, now’s your chance to see what you’ve missed. Here’s Rob Da Bank’s 100%.
