Christian Smith Picks the Hits
As if being a much-loved, globetrotting techno-house producer and DJ weren’t enough, Christian Smith sat down with Onbeat and gave us a breakdown of the top ten tracks in his crate this hot minute.
Swede Christian Smith is the man responsible for Tronic Music, a forward-thinking, boutique techno label with releases from Misstress Barbara, Bryan Zentz and John Selway, among others. Currently based in Barcelona, Christian Smith is set to release Ekspozicija 05: Tronic Treatment on Slovenia’s Matrix Musik, release date TBC. Influenced by The SOS Band, Newcleus, Cameo and later by Sven Väth’s Dorian Grey residency, Smith took to DJing while studying international business in Washington DC, in 1992. By 1994, he started Tronic Music and has not looked back since. Here are his finds:
1) Deetron “The Afterlife”
(Music Man) Dark and moody, 126 bpm powerbomb! Best track Deetron has
done in a long time. Garnier will cream himself when he hears this.
2) Audion “Mouth to Mouth”
(Spectral) Another dancefloor weapon from Matthew Dear. This time, it’s a 13-minute voyage—probably the biggest track of this summer. This will be a crossover hit when it comes out!
3) Christian Smith & John Selway “Silver Bullet”
(Ovum) Been going down a storm at DC10 in Ibiza this summer. Shuffled, funky, with rocking breaks—and its almost minimal.
4) Theo Parish “Falling Up”
(Technasia Remix) This remix has nothing to do with the Carl Craig Remix that
we are all tired of by now. It’s a super groovy, hypnotic and driving house remix. Extremely useful in all kinds of sets.
5) Smith & Selway “Lightening Strike” (Agaric Remix)
(CSM) Minimal, yet funky and a fat groove. Original is also very
useful and works the floor.
6) Kevin Gorman “Black and White”
(CDR) Wicked, super-funky, shuffled, tech-house track—rocks the
house every time.
7) Clones 7 “French Kiss”
(Clones 7) Quite possibly the best “French Kiss” bootleg ever. Properly updated, with better production while staying true to the original.
8) Eric Sneo & Virgil Enzinger “Dynamic Flow”
(Patterns) Solid techno record, especially for the harder sets.
9) Marc House “Bay of Figs”
(Minus) A little weird...but weird is good as well sometimes. This has
amazing reactions on the floor. I like.
10. Alexi Delano “We Used To Play”
(MP3) Great, new school acid house from the Swede living in NYC.
